IN BALANCE - Acrobats, Jugglers, Mountebanks between Circus and Variety in Europe 1930 - 1960
Original vintage photographs of an ephemeral art
Curated by Matteo Giacomelli
The exhibition IN BALANCE- Acrobats, Jugglers, Mountebanks between Circus and Variety in Europe 1930 -1960 has been conceived from a selection of photographs, taken from a larger collection of original vintage photographs preserved in the archive of Spazio e Immagini studio - gallery in Bologna, of circus performances and Theaters-Varieté ranging from the 1930s to the 1960s of the 20th century in Europe.
In balance are the acrobats, dancers, jugglers or magicians performing, jumping, throwing skittles, rings and playing cards into the air and more. The photograph fixes the moment of grace, the one in which the action happens. It is an extraordinary visual heritage dedicated to the ephemeral art of circus performances, played between popular art / folk art and performative action and captured through photography. Today, thanks to a cross-discipline approach made of Photography, Art History, Performing Arts of Theater and Entertainment, original vintage photographs not only take on the role of documentation but also that of an autonomous work of art.
The photographic prints on display at Spazio e Immagini are presented in three ways: large framed photographs of circus performances, unframed photo postcards sent by the artists to the theaters with the proposed shows, photo postcards hung from the ceiling to indicate the suspended and ephemeral nature of the artistic performances. Most of these photographs come from cabaret shows and variety theaters distributed across Germany, Switzerland, Austria and other countries and concer artists engaged on international tours looking for new engagements and show dates.
THE EXHIBITION IN BALANCE, CONSISTING OF A SELECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN FROM A SPECIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION DEDICATED TO THE CIRCUS AND VARIETY IN EUROPE, IS AVAILABLE FOR EXHIBITIONS.

FROM SHOOTING TO FILM – DIRECTORS ON THE SET
Original vintage prints from Italian Cinema 50s - 70s
Curated by Matteo Giacomelli
The exhibition FROM SHOOTING TO THE FILM - DIRECTORS ON THE SET. Original vintage prints from Italian Cinema 50s – 70s presents in the studio gallery Spazio e Immagini in Bologna 30 rare original vintage prints selected for the presence of the director on the set during the film making.
It is a choice aimed at investigating that invisible yet present thread that accompanies the entire development of the film and which often remains unknown to us spectators.
This reconnaissance played in the gap between photography and cinema involves still photographers, photojournalists, photo agencies and anonymous photographers who had the strength to provide an image at the time as image hunters.
The original vintage prints from the following films are on display:

NOTA BIOGRAFICA

MARCELLO DIOTALLEVI Francobolli d’Artista / Artist’s Stamp Sheets 1984 - 2022
Curated by Matteo Giacomelli
The exhibition Marcello Diotallevi - Francobolli d'Artista / Artist's Stamp Sheets 1984-2022 presents in Spazio e Immagini studio-gallery in Bologna the entire production of artist's stamps made by Marcello Diotallevi during his now fifty-year research between Visual Poetry and Mail Art.
The exhibition is an ideal prosecution of last year's exhibition dedicated to Diotallevi's artist's postcards and explores, through the minimal form of the postage stamp, a further facet of his offstream poetics developed through the exchanges of Creative Correspondence.
Today the name of Marcello Diotallevi, distinguished by a cross-cutting practice in respect to the Art System and the market, can rightly be counted together with those of Anna Banana, Bill Gaglione, John Held Jr., Chuck Welch (Crackerjack Kid), Vittore Baroni, Ruggero Maggi and others who have made significant contributions to the elusive supranational vanguard of the Eternal Network.
In the 23 sheets of artists' stamps on display, played between individual mythology and collective celebrations, the entire poetic universe of Diotallevi takes place, formalized between word and image.
It is an exploration to discover the mysterious and intriguing territory of artists' stamps, a place of ideality rather than reality, built under the banner of the practice of creative collaboration and poetry.
